How to create your first tailored resume

  1. Upload your resume — Go to the app and drag & drop your resume (PDF, DOCX, or TXT) onto the upload zone, or click to browse.
  2. Add the job description — Paste a job URL (Greenhouse, Lever, Workday supported) or paste the job description text directly.
  3. Generate — Click "Tailor My Resume" and our AI will analyze the match, rewrite your resume for ATS optimization, generate a cover letter, prepare interview questions, and draft an intro email.
  4. Review & download — View your results on the results page. Download as PDF or copy the HTML.

What is the ATS Match Score?

Your ATS Match Score (0-100%) measures how well your resume aligns with the target job description. It considers:

  • Keyword coverage — Do your skills, tools, and qualifications match what the employer asked for?
  • Experience alignment — Does your work history reflect the required responsibilities?
  • Missing keywords — Skills you're missing are flagged so you know what to add.

Aim for 75%+ for best results. Scores below 50% mean significant mismatches.

What file formats are supported?

We accept three resume formats:

  • PDF — Most common. We use PDF.js to extract text from all pages.
  • DOCX — Microsoft Word format. Parsed with Mammoth.js.
  • TXT — Plain text files.

For best results, make sure your PDF is text-based (not a scanned image). If text extraction fails, try saving your resume as DOCX first.

Navigating the Dashboard

After logging in, you land on the Dashboard — your job search command center:

  • Quick Stats — See total applications, applied, interviewing, and offers at a glance.
  • Mini Kanban — Visual pipeline of all your applications by status. Click any card to open its detail modal in the full tracker.
  • New Application — Click to start a new resume tailoring session.
  • Full Tracker — Opens the complete drag-and-drop Kanban board.
  • Career Command Center — Access standalone tools like Career Pivot, Skills Tracker, and Auto-App Agent.

Setting your Writing Preferences

Customize how the AI writes for you with Writing Preferences.

  • Add custom instructions that apply to all AI-generated outputs — resumes, cover letters, emails, and more.
  • Specify your preferred tone, writing style, or any details the AI should always include or avoid.
  • Use the AI Guide feature for contextual suggestions on what to include.

Access Writing Preferences from the app settings. Your preferences are saved to your account and applied automatically to every generation.

How to download your tailored resume

On the Results page after generation:

  1. Click the "Download PDF" button above your resume preview.
  2. Your browser will generate a clean, ATS-friendly PDF using html2pdf.
  3. You can also copy the HTML to paste into Google Docs or another editor.

All generated resumes are automatically saved to your account and accessible from the Dashboard or Application Tracker.

Generating a cover letter

A cover letter is automatically generated as part of the tailoring process. You can also:

  • Navigate to the Cover Letter tool from your results page for a standalone version.
  • Choose between different tones (Professional, Warm, Bold) for your thank-you emails.
  • Use the Pain Letter tool to write a company-specific pain-point letter instead of a traditional cover letter.

Understanding missing keywords

After tailoring, you'll see a list of missing keywords — skills or qualifications the job description mentions that aren't in your resume.

  • Keywords you actually have can be selected via the AI Co-Pilot — the AI will weave them into your bullet points.
  • Keywords you don't have represent genuine skill gaps. Consider upskilling or addressing them in your cover letter.
  • Use the Skills Tracker tool to see which skills are rising or decaying in your industry.

Recruiter Heatmap

The Recruiter Heatmap visualizes which sections of your resume get the most attention from hiring managers.

  • See a color-coded overlay showing high-attention (hot) vs low-attention (cold) sections based on recruiter behavior data.
  • Identify weak spots that recruiters are likely to skip over.
  • Get suggestions for restructuring your resume to put the strongest content where eyes land first.

Brutal Roast

The Brutal Roast tool gives you brutally honest AI feedback on your resume.

  • Identifies clichés, vague language, and overused buzzwords.
  • Flags weak bullet points that don't demonstrate impact.
  • Highlights missed opportunities where you could better showcase your achievements.
  • Provides actionable rewrites for every issue it finds.

Think of it as a tough-love career coach — the feedback stings, but your resume comes out stronger.

Red Flag Detector

The Red Flag Detector scans your resume for issues that trigger automatic rejection.

  • Formatting issues — Tables, headers, images, and other elements that break ATS parsing.
  • Keyword gaps — Critical missing terms that cause automated filters to reject your application.
  • Content red flags — Employment gaps, job-hopping patterns, or inconsistencies that raise recruiter concerns.
  • Each flag includes a severity level and a specific fix recommendation.

Resume Hook Generator

The Hook Generator creates compelling opening statements for your resume.

  • Generates multiple hook options tailored to the specific role and company.
  • Combines your strongest achievements with the job's key requirements.
  • Optimized for ATS while still sounding natural and engaging to human readers.

A strong opening hook can be the difference between a recruiter reading your full resume or moving on.

Professional Profile Generator

Automatically generate an optimized professional profile summary based on your resume and target role.

  • Creates a compelling About section that highlights your unique value proposition.
  • Generates keyword-rich content that improves your search visibility on professional networks.
  • Aligns your professional presence with the roles you're targeting.

Generated as part of the tailoring process — find it on your results page alongside your resume and cover letter.

Real-Time Live ATS Scoring

The Live ATS Score badge appears in the bottom-right corner of the resume editor and updates automatically as you type.

  • How it works — Keywords are extracted from your target job description. As you edit your resume, the score recalculates in real time (500ms debounce) based on how many JD keywords appear in your resume text.
  • Color coding — Green (75%+), amber (50-74%), red (below 50%).
  • Keyword popover — Click the badge to see which keywords are found (green chips) and which are missing (red chips). Click any missing keyword to copy it to your clipboard.

No API calls are made — scoring happens entirely in the browser for instant feedback.

ATS Platform Simulator

Different ATS platforms parse resumes differently. The ATS Simulator shows how your resume will be interpreted by specific systems.

  • Select a platform — Choose from Greenhouse, Lever, Workday, Taleo, iCIMS, BambooHR, or "Auto-detect."
  • Platform-specific warnings — Learn if Workday will strip your columns, Taleo can't parse your tables, or iCIMS drops your header graphics.
  • Parsed fields preview — See exactly what the ATS will extract: name, contact info, experience, education, and skills.
  • Compatibility score — A platform-specific score with fix suggestions.

Access from your results page under Career Tools. Premium or teaser access required.

Professional Profile Audit

Go beyond content generation — the Professional Profile Audit scores and analyzes your existing professional profile.

  • Overall score (0-100) — How recruiter-optimized your profile is.
  • Section-by-section breakdown — Headline, About, Experience bullets, Skills, and profile photo/banner tips.
  • Side-by-side rewrites — See your current text vs. AI-suggested improvements with copy buttons.
  • Recruiter searchability — Analysis of keyword density and how often your profile would appear in recruiter searches for your target role.

Paste your professional profile text into the tool and click "Audit My Profile."

Recruiter View Simulator

See exactly what a recruiter sees after your resume passes through an ATS.

  • Parsed resume preview — A stripped-down, plain-text view of what the ATS extracted (the "recruiter's screen").
  • Parsing losses — Content that was lost or garbled during ATS processing, with severity levels.
  • 6-Second Scan — What a recruiter notices in the first 6 seconds of reviewing your resume.
  • Recruiter verdict — AI simulates a pass/reject decision with reasoning.

Pre-Written Phrase Library

Browse thousands of AI-generated, high-impact resume phrases organized by role and industry.

  • 15 categories — Software Engineering, Data Science, Product Management, Marketing, Sales, Finance, Healthcare, and more.
  • Metric placeholders — Phrases include [X%], [N+], [$X] placeholders you can fill in with your real numbers.
  • Click to customize — Edit any phrase inline, then copy or add directly to your resume.
  • Target role phrases — If you have a job description loaded, see phrases tailored specifically to that role.

Results are cached locally so you can browse without waiting for re-generation.

Win Probability Scoring

Each application card on your Kanban tracker now shows a Win Probability score (0-99%).

  • How it's calculated — Combines your ATS match score, current application stage, days since applying, engagement activity (notes, interview dates), and more.
  • Color-coded bars — Green (60%+), amber (30-59%), red (below 30%).
  • Summary stats — See your average win probability and best shot across all active applications at the top of the tracker.

Win probability updates automatically as you move cards between columns or add interview details.

Using the Kanban board

The Application Tracker is a full drag-and-drop Kanban board with five columns:

  • Click "Go to Application" to view the full generated resume and tools for that application.

Installing the Chrome Extension

The TailorMeSwiftly Chrome Extension lets you save jobs from any listing site to your tracker in one click — no copy-pasting or tab switching.

  1. Visit the Chrome Web Store listing.
  2. Click "Add to Chrome" and confirm the permissions.
  3. Pin the extension to your toolbar for easy access.
  4. Sign in with the same account you use on TailorMeSwiftly.com.

The extension is free for all users (Free and Premium).

Saving jobs with the extension

Once installed, the extension works on any job listing page:

  1. Navigate to a job listing on any job board (LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, etc.).
  2. Click the TailorMeSwiftly icon in your toolbar, or use the overlay button on the page.
  3. The job title, company, and URL are automatically captured and saved to your Application Tracker.

Saved jobs appear in the Tailored column of your Kanban board, ready for you to tailor your resume.

Extension troubleshooting

If the extension is not saving jobs or appears disconnected:

  • Check sign-in status — Click the extension icon and make sure you are signed in with the same account you use on the website.
  • Update the extension — Go to chrome://extensions, enable Developer Mode, and click "Update".
  • Reload the page — Some job boards load content dynamically. Try refreshing the listing page.
  • Check permissions — The extension needs permission to read the current page to extract job details. Re-enable permissions in Chrome's extension settings if needed.

Page appears blank or won't load

If a page appears blank or stuck on a loading spinner:

  1. Hard refresh — Press Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac).
  2. Clear cache — Cached CSS or JS files may be outdated. Clear your browser cache or try incognito mode.
  3. Check your connection — A stable internet connection is required for AI generation and data loading.
  4. Try a different browser — We support Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

If the issue persists, check the Release Notes for known issues or contact support.

Resume text extraction fails

If your resume uploads but shows "No text found":

  • Your PDF may be a scanned image rather than text-based. Open it in a PDF editor and try "Save as Text" or re-export from Word.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be parsed. Remove the password first.
  • Try saving your resume as DOCX and re-uploading — DOCX parsing is more reliable for complex layouts.
  • As a last resort, paste your resume text directly into the text area using the "Paste text instead" option.

Job URL import not working

Not all job URLs can be automatically fetched. If URL import fails:

  • Some sites (LinkedIn, Indeed) block automated fetching. Copy and paste the job description text manually instead.
  • Supported job board formats include Greenhouse, Lever, and Workday (with JSON-LD structured data).
  • Make sure the URL is a direct link to the job posting, not a search results page.
  • If the URL works but extracts the wrong text, paste the JD manually for best results.

Can't log in or sign up

Common login issues and fixes:

  • Google login popup blocked — Allow popups for tailormeswiftly.com in your browser settings.
  • "Authentication not ready" — Wait a moment and try again. If it persists, hard refresh the page.
  • Email confirmation required — If you signed up with email, check your inbox (and spam folder) for the confirmation link. You must verify your email before logging in.
  • Forgot password — Click "Forgot password?" on the login page to receive a reset link.

How to navigate between Applications, Learning, and News

TailorMeSwiftly is now a multi-product platform. You can switch between different product areas using the app grid icon in the header.

  1. Look for the grid icon (a 3x3 dot grid) in the top header bar, between the logo and your account actions.
  2. Click the icon to open the product switcher panel.
  3. Choose from the available products:
    • Applications — The core resume tailoring, cover letters, interview prep, and all career tools you already know.
    • Learning — AI-powered personalized learning roadmaps that identify your skill gaps and guide you to your target role (Tailor My Learning).
    • News — AI-powered news briefings tailored to your career and interests (Tailor My News).

The product switcher is available on every page so you can jump between areas at any time without losing your work.

Getting started with Tailor My Learning

Tailor My Learning analyzes your resume against a target job description and generates a personalized learning roadmap to close your skill gaps.

  1. Navigate to Tailor My Learning using the product switcher grid in the header.
  2. Select a saved resume and paste the job description for your target role.
  3. Click Generate Learning Path — the AI will identify your gaps and build a custom roadmap.
  4. Your roadmap is organized into Tracks (e.g., "The Foundation", "The Builder's Toolkit"), each containing sequential skills.
  5. Click any skill node to open its study guide, which includes:
    • Why the skill matters for this specific role
    • How it connects to what you already know
    • A Knowledge Check with tough reflection questions
    • A Boss Fight mini-project to prove mastery
  6. Work through skills in order — each builds on the previous one.

Your generated learning paths are saved and accessible anytime from the Learning dashboard.

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a scientifically-proven learning technique that schedules reviews at increasing intervals to maximize long-term retention. Tailor My Learning uses the SM-2 algorithm to automatically schedule when you should revisit each skill based on how well you performed on its knowledge check.

  • After completing a knowledge check, the system calculates when you should review the skill next.
  • Skills you found easy are scheduled further out; skills you struggled with come back sooner.
  • When a review is due, the skill node pulses with a visual reminder on your learning path.
  • A forgetting curve visualization shows your predicted retention over time for each skill.

You do not need to manually track review dates — the system handles it automatically and reminds you when it is time to revisit a skill.

What are mastery levels?

Mastery levels reflect how well you have demonstrated understanding of a skill through knowledge checks and boss fight assessments. There are four tiers:

  • Bronze — You have completed the study guide and attempted the knowledge check.
  • Silver — You scored well on the knowledge check and completed the boss fight checklist.
  • Gold — You consistently score highly across reviews and demonstrate deep understanding.
  • Platinum — You have maintained gold-level performance across multiple spaced repetition review cycles.

Your mastery level for each skill is displayed on the skill node in your learning path and contributes to your overall roadmap completion score.

How do daily challenges work?

Daily challenges are short, focused learning tasks that keep you engaged and building momentum. Each day, Tailor My Learning presents a new challenge related to your active learning paths.

  • Complete the challenge to earn XP rewards that contribute to your overall learning score.
  • Build a streak by completing challenges on consecutive days — your streak count is saved to your account and persists across sessions.
  • Challenges are tailored to your current skill level and the topics in your active roadmap.

Daily challenges are a great way to stay consistent without committing to a full study session.

Can I add my own resources to a learning path?

Yes. Each skill node in your learning path has a Community Resources section where you can submit helpful links — articles, tutorials, videos, or documentation — that other learners on the same path can benefit from.

  • Click "Add Resource" on any skill node to submit a URL with a title and optional description.
  • Submitted links are validated automatically to check for broken URLs. If a link becomes inaccessible, a warning badge is displayed.
  • Community resources appear alongside the AI-generated resources in the study guide.

Please only submit resources that are relevant and helpful. We reserve the right to remove inappropriate or spammy submissions.

What is a boss fight?

A boss fight is a mini-project challenge at the end of each skill's study guide. It is designed to test whether you can apply what you have learned in a practical scenario.

  • Each boss fight includes a project prompt that simulates a real-world task related to the skill.
  • A self-assessment rubric checklist guides you through evaluating your own work against specific criteria.
  • Completing the boss fight and checking off the rubric items earns XP and contributes to your mastery level for that skill.

Boss fights are self-paced — there is no timer. The goal is to build confidence that you can use the skill in a real work environment.

Getting started with AI News Briefings

Tailor My News generates personalized AI news briefings based on what matters to your career. There are three ways to add interests:

  • My Interests — Add topics directly using the tag input or pick from suggested topics (e.g., "AI in healthcare", "fintech regulation", "product management trends").
  • From Resume — Upload or use your saved resume and the AI will automatically extract your skills, industry, and experience as interest topics.
  • From Jobs — Pull context from your tracked applications so your briefing covers the companies and roles you are actively pursuing.

Each briefing includes a concise summary of the top stories and actionable takeaways. You can also listen to your briefing as a podcast-style audio narration, ask follow-up questions in the Q&A chat, or click "Catch Me Up" on any story for a timeline of how it developed.

Story Reactions: Each story has thumbs up/down and bookmark buttons. React to stories to help the AI learn what you want more or less of in future briefings.

Continuing Stories: When a topic appears in multiple briefings, a "Continuing Stories" banner shows at the top with links to previous coverage so you can follow developing stories across days.

Story reactions & continuing stories

Each story in your briefing has reaction buttons:

  • Thumbs up — Tell the AI you want more stories like this.
  • Thumbs down — Tell the AI you want fewer stories like this.
  • Bookmark — Save a story for later reference.

Your reactions are stored and used to weight your interests over time, helping the AI deliver more relevant briefings.

Continuing Stories: When a topic you read about previously appears in a new briefing, a "Continuing Stories" banner appears at the top. Click the link to jump back to the earlier briefing where the topic first appeared. This helps you follow developing stories across days and weeks without losing context.

Managing your briefing history

The My Briefings feed page keeps a full history of every briefing you have generated.

  • Browse past briefings — Scroll through your feed to revisit any previous briefing. Each entry shows the date, topic summary, and source method (interests, resume, or applications).
  • Re-read or re-listen — Open any past briefing to read the full content or replay the podcast audio.
  • Track trends — Over time, your briefing history becomes a personal archive of industry news relevant to your career trajectory.

Access the My Briefings feed from the News section of the product switcher or directly from the Tailor My News page.

Using the Career Pivot tool

The Career Pivot Translator helps you reframe your experience for a new industry or role.

  1. Enter your current experience — Describe your background, job titles, and key accomplishments in the text input field.
  2. Specify your target — Enter the industry, role, or field you want to transition into in the second input field.
  3. Generate your translation — The AI maps your existing skills and experience to the language and expectations of your target industry.

The output highlights transferable skills, suggests how to reword bullet points, and identifies gaps you may need to address. Use this alongside the resume tailoring tool to craft a pivot-ready resume.

Briefing Settings & delivery

Open Briefing Settings from your briefing page or the Dashboard. The settings page has two tabs:

  • Interests tab — Manage your topics with tags, add new ones, or import from your resume or job applications. Suggested topics appear based on trending news and your active applications.
  • Settings tab — Configure how your briefing is generated and delivered:
  1. Tone & Style — Choose between Public Radio Host, Morning Brew, Executive Summary, or Deep Dive. A live preview shows an example of each tone.
  2. Daily Email Briefing — Toggle on to receive your briefing by email every morning. Pick a delivery time (6–9 AM).
  3. Source Preferences — Whitelist your favorite outlets or block sources you want to avoid.
  4. Plain English Mode — Replaces jargon, acronyms, and technical terms with simple language.
  5. Silver Lining & Opposing Views — Framing controls that emphasize constructive angles or show multiple perspectives.
  6. Muted Topics — Temporarily hide a topic for 1–30 days.
  7. Location — Enter your city to include local news automatically.

Your daily briefing email includes the full news briefing and a link to listen to the podcast version.

Asking follow-up questions about your briefing

After your briefing is generated, a Q&A Chat section appears below the content. Type any question and the AI will answer using your briefing as context.

  • Multi-turn conversation — Ask follow-up questions and the AI remembers the full thread.
  • Briefing context — The AI knows everything in your current briefing, so you can ask things like "What does the Fed decision mean for tech stocks?" or "Summarize the climate story in one sentence."
  • Resets on new briefing — The chat thread clears when you generate a new briefing.

Using "Catch Me Up" on a story

Each news item in your briefing has a "Catch Me Up" button. Click it to get:

  • Reverse-chronological timeline — 3–5 key events showing how the story developed.
  • "Why It Matters Now" — A short summary of current significance and what to watch next.

This is useful for stories you have been away from or that have evolved over several days.
